What is the Dental Implant Procedure Like?
Once you have decided that dental implants are the right choice for you, you will need to make an appointment with a dentist. This is so they can approve you for this minimally invasive surgical procedure. During this first consultation appointment, you will need to provide a full health history. This helps the dentist to understand your specific situation and accordingly assess your oral health as well as your overall health.
If you are approved to undergo dental implant surgery, your next step is making an appointment for a dental examination.
The dental implant procedure
A full dental examination is important as this is the time for the dentist to find out just how much bone support is going to be available to place the implants. A 3D scanner is often used to evaluate how much bone is left in the areas that are missing teeth.
If there is sufficient bone then the next appointment will be scheduled for the actual placement of the dental implant. If there is not enough bone present for the implant to properly take hold, then the dentist will discuss bone grafting options with the patient. The implant procedure can continue as soon as the bone graft has fully healed, which varies with each individual dental patient.
Placing the implant
The type of sedation method discussed during the initial consultation appointment will be administered to the patient. The dentist will then carefully place the implant into the patient's jawbone. This allows it to act just like a natural tooth’s root.
This minimally invasive surgical procedure will cause patients to experience some swelling, bruising and minor bleeding, which is to be expected. Any discomfort or pain tends to subside in a couple of days and can be treated by taking an over- the- counter medication. Many implant patients take off one day for the procedure, while others return to work the very next day.
The healing process
The healing process can take anywhere from three to five months. This is the time when the implant is fusing to the bone, making a strong and sturdy base. Following aftercare instructions closely is necessary. This will include eating soft foods for at least a couple of weeks after the surgical procedure.
Once the implant has completely healed, the patient will need to have a small connector post attached to the implant. This connector post allows the false, permanent tooth to be attached.
One of the many great things about dental implants is that they are a permanent tooth replacement option. But, it is still necessary to make regular dental appointments to ensure that they remain in their proper place and are doing the job they are supposed to do.
